Open Access Week: The Road to Open Access

The Plan S initiative was launched in 2018, with the aim of “Making full and immediate Open Access a reality”. There are several possible routes towards this goal, from Diamond Open Access, to transformative deals, to Rights Retention Strategies. What does the publishing landscape look like now, and how far away are we from full OA today, 4 years on? Are we moving in the right direction? What “flavours” of Open Access are sustainable, and how do we ensure transparency of costs related to publishing?
Johan Rooryck (cOAlition S), Johanne Raade (UiT), and Carolyn Kirby (Taylor & Francis) will each give a presentation, and then Nina Karlstrøm (Sikt) will join them in a panel debate/discussion.
Presenters:
Johan Rooryck is a Belgian linguist and a visiting professor at Leiden University, where he held a professorship in French linguistics until 2020. Johan was awarded an honorary doctorate at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway in September 2022. He is the editor-in-chief of the open access journal Glossa and the former executive editor of Lingua (1999-2015) which he and the entire editorial board left after being unable to come to an agreement with Elsevier regarding fair open access. Furthermore, Johan is a board member of several organizations dedicated to 'flipping' existing subscription journals to Fair Open Access. From 2019-2020, he was open access champion at cOAlition S, and since 2020, he has been the executive director of cOAlition S.
Johanne Raade is the Library Director at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway. She has a degree in history, and after working in the UiT administration for many years, she has served as library director since 2015. Johanne has been instrumental in developing research support services for the future, including open science. She has also worked on the new rights retention strategy. This allows UiT researchers to self-archive all author-accepted manuscripts without embargo, regardless of where they have been published.
Nina Karlstrøm is head of the section for open research at Sikt; the Norwegian agency for shared services in Education and Research. She is part of the team who negotiates the read and publish deals with the publishers.
Carolyn Kirby is Director of Open Research & Transformative Agreements at Taylor & Francis. She works within the Commercial Division at Taylor & Francis, in a global role focused on growing the open access programme. Carolyn works closely with academic libraries and consortia to understand their open research goals and to put in place agreements which are sustainable for both sides, including Transformative Agreements. Carolyn has focused on understanding the impact of the growth in open research from Taylor & Francis, as well as ensuring the development of OA infrastructure is meeting the needs of evolving business models. Carolyn also works closely with the F1000Research team and is a strong advocate for open research practices.
